World’s Youngest Self Made Billionaire - Bill Gates

Bill Gates the founder of the world’s largest software business Microsoft Cooperation with its partner Paul Allen and became one of the most influential and richest men in the world or in the planet. Before decades he was listed as a world’s youngest self made billionaire. Gates is one of the best entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution.

Family Background

Bill Gates was born in an upper middle class family on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, which is the largest city in Washington. He is the son of William H. Gates (November 30, 1925) who is a senior lawyer and philanthropist (love of humanity which is expressed by donation of money for a noble cause) and author of the books named as ‘Showing Up for Life’ and ‘Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime’ and Mary Maxwell Gates (July 5, 1929 to June 10, 1994) who was served as the first woman in many occupations such as  in 18 years (1975 - 1993) as a board of Directors of University of Washington board of regent, King County’s United Way. His grandfather was a state legislature and a mayor and his maternal grandfather was JW Maxwell who was a national bank president. He has one elder sister named as Kristianne and one younger sister as Libby.

Willam H. Gates always taught his children to “Work hard and take nothing for granted”.

Bill Gates enjoyed his childhood life by playing games and taking part in different activities.

School Life

As a child Bill was a studious, spending majority of time on reference books.

At the age of 11 or 12, Bill’s parent was worried about their behavior.

At the age of 13, he attended the private Lakeside school where he gets the first introduction to computers. He taught himself programming language such as ‘BASIC’ by making a simple game as ‘Tic-Tac-Toe’.  Then he was enjoying the work to be done on computers and tried to spend his time on Computer Center Corporation (CCC) for learning source code of certain language such as Fortan, Machine Code, COBOL and Lisp. He was banned for a month from Lakeside school as he was exploiting bugs in operating system to obtain free computer time.

At the age of 17, in 1970s a business partnership between Gates and Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data, whose objective was to read raw data from traffic counters which was built on the Intel 8080 processor and create reports for traffic engineers.

In 1973, Gates was a National Merit Scholar when he graduated from Lakeside school and then he took admission in Harvard where he enrolled himself in mathematics and computer science. He had a tremendous interest in his code and then he found a great opportunity to develop his own company and dropped his studies from Harvard with a mission of reaching computer on every desk and Microsoft software on every computer.

Foundation of Microsoft

BASIC

In January 1975, he came across the issue of Popular Electronics which demonstrated the Altair 8800.

He founded Microsoft in 1976, when a contract was signed with Micro Instrumental and Telemetry Systems (MITS) to develop a basic operating system for their new micro computers. Initially he reviewed each and every line of code. 

International Business Machines Cooperation (IBM)

In 1980, IBM approached in reference to an operating system for its upcoming personal computers. They work hard to sell their operating system with other companies. Microsoft gained the dominant position in the market as personal computer mark a boom start. Programs like Microsoft Word and Excel have become the industry standard.

Windows

On 20th November, 1985, Microsoft launched the first retail version of Microsoft Windows.  This replaced the text interface with graphic interface and became the best seller and captures the majority of market share.

In 1995, Windows 95 was released with new features and standards. This version acts as a backbone for all the new version of operating system such as Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

Apple

In 1981, Apple led by Steve Jobs invited Bill Gates to develop software for Macintosh computers.

Personal Life

In 1992, Bill Gates married to Melinda French and has three children Jennifer Katharine (1996), Rory John (1999) and Phoebe Adele (2002). Gates formed Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with his wife.

In an interview, Gates states that he has no use of money and will leave only a small percentage of his wealth for his children.

Charitable Work

Bill Gates is not a greedy person. Few years back he visited Chicago’s Einstein Elementary School and donated $110,000, a bunch of computers and provided internet connectivity to number of schools.

Secondly, he donated 38 million dollars for building of a computer institute at Stanford University and $8 billion to improve global health.

  6. In 2013, Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award.
  7. In 2015, Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award for their social work in the country.
  8. In 2016, Presidential Medal of Freedom
  9. In 2017, Legion of Honour.
